Help
I have an Amstrad PC2386.
after fixing a hard disk drive problem I found the computer crashing on
curtain programs.
I have run Checkit to find there seems to be a video memory fault on
curtain modes. The following is the printout from Checkit.

Hi,
I found another one for COMMAND.COM:
In DOS 5.0 COMMAND will not execute AUTOEXEC.BAT even if it is made
resident if you put /D on the command line.
If you have country-code 0x52 installed and you do not have a file
AUTOEXEC.BAT, then COMMAND will try to execute KAUTOEXE.BAT

In this case (or for that matter in any case) you can use the Norton
Utilities to execute the "make disk bootable" function. This will load
the appropriate sacred files to disk, and if necessary will relocate
any other files which are presently occupying the low-numbered sectors
which absolutely must be assigned to IO.SYS (or IBMBIO.COM) for the
boot process to work.
Incidentally, somewhere in the past couple of releases the boot process
was redesigned so that only the first few sectors of IO.SYS/IBMBIO.COM
must be located in the first sectors of the disk. The remainder of
IO.SYS/IBMBIO.COM, as well as the entire file MSDOS.SYS/IBMDOS.COM can
be located anywhere on the disk and may be fragmented. The boot record
program reads in only these mandatory low-address sectors and passes
control to the code there; the remainder of the program is bootstrapped
in. This gimmick is necessary because there just isn't enough room in
the boot sector for the code required to handle fragmented files or the
mapping of cluster numbers to cylinder/head/sector addressing.

If it's your OS/2 parittion, pick HPFS as part of installation. Boot
the install disks and do as it says for this.
If it's some other instalation, be sure the IFS=HPFS driver is at the
top of CONFIG.SYS and just format the partition:
FORMAT <d:> /FS:HPFS
>Full screen FDISK doesn't seem to give any options.
It shouldn't. HPFS is the same partition type as FAT.

Really? I thought /FSTYPE is part of FORMAT, not FDISK.
>The docs suggest that I can format HPFS partitions at system

That's only necessary to format your OS/2 partition. OS/2 has many
open files at all times, so you can't format the partition they're in
while the system is running. It's much easier to let the install
program do it for you. Especially since you'll have to re-install
after the re-format anyway.

About this, what i`ve heard is that the vb was not able to output on a

Subject: Lost Logical drive information for extended partition
I am having a problem with a hard disk, ST-1239A (IDE 200MB). The hard
disk was partitioned under DOS 5.0 with a primary partition and and
extended partition, with three logical drives in the extended
partition. When I moved the drive and controller to another system,
the logical drives in the extended partition were gone. This was
determined using FDISK to view the partition information. (I also
moved another drive at the same time, and it's logical drives were
there, so I am pretty sure I didn't do anything funny to either drive.)
Also, this drive was the boot drive, and DOS can't find the operating
system, so it is unable to boot. The error message is "Missing
Operating System". My conclusion is that something happened to the
drive during the movement from one box to the other. My question is,
what can I do? (Short of reformatting.) I hesitate to even do a SYS
C: since I still won't be able to see the other drives, and I don't
think that will fix the problem.
I am afraid to use FDISK to redefine the partition, especially since I
don't have the original number of cylinders defined for the logical
drives. I will likely lose everything. Is there another tool I can
use to look at and recover partitioning information? All the disk
utilities I've seen need to be able to see the drive at the DOS level
(PC-Tools, and Disk Technician Pro). What about Norton?
This problem is particulary annoying since one of the logical drives
missing contains the stacker drivers, and without them I can't get at
anything on either drive!
Your comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Subject: OS/2 2.1beta Questions
Greetings,
This is addressed to the OS/2 fans out there.
We have six machines (386, 486, isa, eisa) running the December relase
of OS/2 version 2.1 beta (we hope to install the March release in the
next week or so). All in all, the systems are quite stable and are a
joy to use. I might mention that all have 8 - 32 MB of RAM and two have
Adaptec SCSI 1542/1742 controllers.
Now to the problems:
One box, a 386DX/33 ISA 20MB, has an Orchid Fahrenheit 1280 graphic
card and I have downloaded and installed the F1280 driver. No matter
what I do, I can only get plain-vanilla VGA 16-color resolution on the
screen. The system is stable with the driver, but I get no higher
resolution.
Question: Has anyone been able to get SVGA resolution out of this card
using the F1280 driver and OS/2 2.1. Orchid here in Germany says that
it works, but I don't know how. I must be doing something wrong.
The second problem involves WIN-OS/2 settings. On two machines, a
486DX/50 EISA/SCSI with 32 MB and a 386DX/33 ISA/IDE with 8 MB (both
with ATI 8514A graphics using the IBM generic 8514A driver) I can set
up a windows program and open the program notebook, set the path and
full-screen win-os/2 option and then open the win-os/2 settings box and
chose between standard and enhanced modes. This is the behavior I would
expect and that appears most practical. On the rest of the machines,
however, I can only set the path as * if I want to use the win-os/2
settings (otherwise the win-os/2 radio buttons are grayed out) and as
soon as I change back to the real program path on the Program page, the
session returns to os/2 window and the program loads very slowly in
standard mode. What's more, if I do use the * and look in the win-os/2
option of the settings box, there are no choices at all, not real,
standard or enahnced modes. The config.sys files are identical except
for the SCSI statements where appropriate and the windows system.ini
files are also thesame. Questions: What are the variables that allow or
do not allow the win/os2mode choice in the settings box? How do you set
up a win-os/2 app so that you can chose the correct path and have the
win-os/2 full-screen choice?
Finally, I want to share something I learned yesterday. Maybe it is
common knowledge, but I didn't know it. The ATI 8514A and Mach32
drivers are not compatible with the 32-bit graphics engine. ATI
promises to try to have a driver for OS/2 2.1 in the second quarter of
1993. If you do try to use the present 1.3 driver, all you get is a
capital crash.
Sorry for the verbosity, but I did not know how to explain the problems
without all of these words. I would be most obliged if someone could
help me.
Thanks in advance!

As I understand it, SIMTEL-20 is dropping the PKZIP products due to the
export restrictions of that product. New uploads will be using
INFO-ZIP groups unzip and zip utilities. So, *.zip files can now have
3 formats. (1) The older version 1.10 ZIPS that used to be the
standard, (2) The version 2.04x ZIP format for the newer uploads at
some sites, and (3) INFO-ZIP's format for uploads to SIMTEL-20 and its
mirrors.
The INFO-ZIP programs are separate like the PKZIP products and
include source code (C). The version numbers are different for each.
ZIP is version 5.x and UNZIP is version 2.x
Some of this might be wrong though. I'm sorry about that, but that's
what I remember. Can anyone help with more definite info? I'm finding
this situation getting more confusing!

Yes, I have the VideoBlaster, Video for Windows, and the SoundBlaster
16 ASP.
> I need to be able to get real-time video input from several sources,
>and be able to output it to a TV or VCR. From what I've heard, the VB
>can do this. But,
Halt. Stop. Mistake in progress. The VideoBlaster has no ability to
output to VCR or TV. It is an input only device. It is _NOT_
compatible with any external scan converter that would allow it to
output to NTSC in my experience. The only method of outputing the
video inputted from the VideoBlaster that I am aware of is to digitize
the video using Video for Windows and the VideoBlaster then play back
the digitized video using an external scan converter (purchased
separately) or using a SVGA card with NTSC output. I doubt that a NTSC
capable SVGA card would be able to pass through the video image
properly either (i.e. no digital effects passthru unit).
> - Does it have a built-in cable tuner ?
No, it selects between three video line-in sources using regular RCA
jacks. You'd need a VCR or other tuner to select channels.
> - Can it display 30 frames/sec digitized using MPEG or other
> compression algorithm.
Well, yes and no. As I've explained it does not have NTSC output.
However, it can display 30 frames per second in a window on your SVGA
CRT. It does this using a keying technique (overlay of the image in
all the pixels of a predined single color). This is done in hardware
and seems to be pretty much a analog klug (the image isn't going
through your bus or CPU). The VideoBlaster intercepts your CRT cable.
The question you didn't ask was how quickly can it digitize incoming
video frames. It depends on the size of the frame and the speed of the
CPU. On my 33MHz 486, it tops out at 15 frames per second at 320x200.
If you drop the frame size, you can digitize 20 frames per second.
> - How does it handle sound (or does it) ?
It does not digitize sound. However, it does have a small stereo mixer
for combining several audio input sources into a single output. If you
want to digitize sound, you'll need to buy a SoundBlaster. They work
in tandem pretty well. I would highly recommend the SoundBlaster 16
ASP because of it's hardware audio compression and higher fidelity.
> I'm hoping getting this single $ 399 card will serve all my video
>needs. If anyone has any experience or comments on this board, I'd
>love to hear about it.
You should be able to get it much cheaper than that. I've seen prices
dip as low as $320. Make sure you get the Video for Windows software.
It was not included in the original VideoBlaster shipment. The Video
for Windows software will allow you to do MPEG-like compression and
edit digitized video clips under a GUI interface -- very cool.
The Video Blaster's maximum input resolution is 640x480 which is really
only usable in stills (even a Pentium can't force 30 frames/sec at
640x480 on the VideoBlaster according to rumor).
FYI: The Creative Labs technical support line is terrible.
Other advice, if you do get a VideoBlaster, make sure your SVGA card
has a feature connector (passthru feature), the VideoBlaster cannot
function without it.
My overall impression of the VideoBlaster? It's a poorly thoughout
kludge which can do some interesting things at a cheap price. Video
for Windows (Microsoft) is it's saving grace. For a real digital video
editing system capable of 30 frames per second you'll still need to pay
a couple of thousand. Keep your eyes open, but the technology is just
not here yet. Maybe a year away from accessible.

A 20 pin male connector for the controller
A 6 pin male connector which use is unknown to me

all the proper cables, and I powered my computer but then the BIOS
reported it couldn't initialize the HD's controller (I don't know which
one) and it hung. As a test I installed only the 21M HD and it did
work fine, so it seems my only promblem is configuring the two HDs as
MASTER and SLAVE.
So if you happen to have any information that could help me,

Well, I once had this problem, when I had 2 drives and didnt have any
info. The only thing you can do is to use the famous method of
scientific trial and error.. ;)
What I mean by this is that you will need to configure your BIOS for 2
hard drives <40 and 20>. .also make sure that the one that you want to
be master one must be at the end of the cable and slave in the middle..
the other end is controller.
After your BIOS knows that you have 2 drives and you have both of them
connected, rty changing jumpers on that 20 megger <leave 40megger alone
for now>... there should be at the most 3 or 4 tries.. if that doesnt
help then change jumper on the 40 megger and do all of it over again...
if NOTHING helps then e-mail me and I'll try to dig up some manuals for
ya...
P.S. I dont think that playing around like that should damage your
drives, but I can however guaruntee it, either... hope I was of help

Assume that I have an .EXE file written on C (or C++ or PASCAL) and
I know that it uses a number of functions and I know all para- meters
and calling convention. Can I extract from .EXE file an .OBJ file
containing these functions?
Thanks in any advance.
